EXCLUSIVE: Wellington Phoenix are close to offering a lifeline to out-of-contract All-Whites striker Jeremy Brockie at crisis club Newcastle Jets.
Phoenix boss Ricki Herbert confirmed the club have their eye on adding to the attacking arsenal next season with the Jets striker high up on their wish-list.
“He’s a great kid and he’s done fantastically well. So if we can come to some sort of agreement, I don’t think we’d be too far away,” Herbert told au.fourfourtwo.com.
Brockie scored nine times for the Jets this season in a breakout season for the 24-year-old.
It’s been reported that the Jets players have been told to look for new clubs and with Brockie out of contract it seems the deal could happen sooner rather than later.
“Hopefully in Jeremy’s mind, we are the main team that he’s looking at to join," added Herbert.
Brockie recently resorted to posting his nine goals on YouTube as a ploy to promote himself.
He plans to wed later this month and is expected to tie up a new club by then.
The attacker - and newly-signed James Brown - were the only Newcastle Jets A-League players who attended last night’s A-League/W-League awards.
Brockie sat at the Sydney FC table, while Brown joined his former team-mates at the Gold Coast United table. The Newcastle Jets table lay empty and unused all night.
