Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has not ruled out the prospect of utilising the youth in his squad for the upcoming Premier League season as they face the privilege of juggling midweek games in UEFA Champions League.
Spurs had a cluster of rotations in their first match of the International Champions Cup (ICC) on Tuesday night against Serie A winners Juventus and youngsters such as Josh Onomah, Marcus Edwards and Will Miller were amongst the players talked about after the game.
“You never know, the most important thing is that they have the opportunity to show the quality and they need to take the opportunity, it’s very good to play this type of game,” Pochettino said.
“The biggest clubs in the world can show the quality and personality in the Champions League. A good example from last season is Dele Alli, who came from league one. After a few months he took a place on the starting 11 and he played in the Euro’s with England.
“They all have different times to mature and improve. When they show they have talent, we need to give the opportunity and then to be careful and care for them.”
Tottenham now look to Friday night where they face La Liga giants Ateltico Madrid in the final game of the ICC and Albeit the Argentinian sent a big message to the vibrant youth in his squad, Pochettino was bold to say the training should not be overdone so early in the pre-season.
Pochettino said his mind was made up about “99 per cent” of the line-up he would field against Atletico, but was not revealing anything specific, but was adamant little had to be changed tactically to what was shown against Juventus.
“Our idea is to play the same we did against Juventus, we need to be great, deliver our ideas and we’re in the process where we need to improve and learn,” he said.
“I’m happy with the way we played against Juventus, we need to repeat our performance for tomorrow.
“We have a lot of things to do here in Melbourne with commercial activities and marketing activities, it’s important to come from England to Australia, the demand for us is good to give our best and expand our mark.
“But it’s difficult to train, manage the jet lag, some players are more tired or bored in the hotel. We’ve trained very hard in the first few weeks before coming here and all we need to relax and to try to share with our fans and compete.
“It’s not a moment to push too much in the training session and improve, it’s only one week, so we’re not worried about that. We have time to prepare the season again when we get back to London.”
