Pogrebniak hobbled off after 15 minutes of the match in Burghausen having set Russia on their way to a 2-1 win with a stunning free-kick just three minutes earlier.

The 24-year-old, who plays his club football for UEFA Cup winners Zenit St Petersburg, underwent tests in Munich after the match, where it was discovered he had suffered damage to the meniscus in his left knee.

"He has a little irritation of the meniscus and a little rupture of the back part of it," Russia coach Guus Hiddink said in quotes reported on www.uefa.com.

"He won't be training in the next few days but it is possible he will play at Euro 2008.

"We will have a more precise ruling on him in the next few days.

"Even if the information about this injury is confirmed, I am not planning to call up another player instead of him."

Should Pogrebniak fail to win his fitness battle it would be doubly cruel on the talented frontman, who was forced to miss the UEFA Cup final against Rangers through suspension having scored 10 goals for the Russian champions in the earlier rounds.
