JOEL Porter is hungry for a Socceroos recall and sees no reason why playing third tier English football should rule him out.
The Hartlepool United forward has scored twice in the opening rounds of the new League One campaign and now the 29-year-old is hoping that hitting the net on a regular basis will be enough to catch Pim Verbeek's eye.
Adelaide-born Porter has netted five goals and earned four senior Australia caps. However, he has not pulled on the green and gold since a Confederations Cup game against New Zealand in 2002.
Porter almost signed for Wellington Phoenix during the off season but instead was held to a contract option by Hartlepool.
He told the Middlesbrough Evening Gazette: "I would love an international recall, that was one of the main reasons that I came over to England five years ago, to progress my career internationally.
“Things haven’t worked out obviously with a few injuries here and there but I can only keep scoring goals and hopefully the manager and the people who look after Australia are watching.”
While the likes of Harry Kewell, Mark Viduka, Josh Kennedy, Scott McDonald and Bruce Djite are all playing in Europe's top competitions Porter's current club compete in League One.
However, the Victoria Park striker says the third tier of English football should not be sniffed at in terms of quality. Recent Socceroo call-up Chris Coyne also plies his trade in League One with Colchester United.
He said: "League One isn’t the worst league in Europe. It’s very competitive and there are a lot of good players in it that are playing for Wales, Scotland, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
“I can’t see why I would be off the radar, but we will just have to wait and see."
