Cristiano Ronaldo made his mark on the 2018 World Cup early, winning a penalty two minutes in.
Portugal's captain converted past David De Gea and Ronaldo has now scored in four different World Cup editions.
Diego Costa worked his way forward in a one man show for Spain's equaliser midway through the first-half.
But, Ronaldo venomously drilled a left-footed shot from long-range to get the lead back, as De Gea let it squeeze past him.
Costa scored his second after the break following David Silva's free-kick, a routine move from the training ground, before Nacho struck brilliantly to give Spain the lead.
However, it was Ronaldo who had the final say, with his spectacular free-kick two minutes from time securing a memorable 3-3 draw.
