The 29-year-old has been a one-club man throughout his career so far and Prandelli believes it would benefit him to leave for a new challenge.

One potential club mooted as a destination is Chelsea, with new manager Jose Mourinho believed to be interested in De Rossi, who has made more than 400 appearances for Roma since making his debut in 2001.

Prandelli told Rai: "Maybe leaving Roma would be a defeat on a personal level for Daniele De Rossi but, professionally, I believe it would be a good thing."

During his time at the Stadio Olimpico, De Rossi has won two Coppa Italias and has previously been a target for Manchester City.

Former City boss Roberto Mancini was a keen admirer of the midfielder but he remained with the Serie A club, opting to sign a five-year deal in February 2012.

Any potential move for De Rossi, will likely have to wait until after the Confederations Cup, with the 29-year-old likely to play a key role in Italy's plans.
