And the glovesman may be lining up for Gold Coast in the Queensland derby with a deal to play for Miron Bleiberg's Coast set to be inked.

"Talks are in progress and hopefully in the next month or so it will happen," Higgins told au.fourfourtwo.com.

As for the rivalry, Higgins, a Gold Coast resident, says the relatively short distance between Brisbane and the Gold Coast means the fans will be eating up this newly created derby marquee match.

"To be honest, I think it's going to be huge. I don't know about the others but it's the closest derby in the league being only about 45 minutes down the motorway. And I think it's got the potential to be the biggest. And the league needs these sorts of games" he said.

"There's always a lot of talk about the Gold Coast Premier League and the Brisbane Premier League. So the rivalry is pretty intense so I can only imagine it will escalate when three A-League points are at stake."

The 201cm Higgins, 32, is clearly a favourite of coach Bleiberg with the former Roar supremo pledging to sign Higgins earlier this year when Gold Coast's A-League bid was called Galaxy and run by different owners.

Now with new owners, an A-League licence and money to burn off the park, Higgins says his Gold Coast A-League deal could be the chance he's been waiting for.

"Definitely it's unfinished business for me [in the A-League]. I only played a handful of games in that first season at Queensland Roar so I'd love the opportunity to prove to myself that I can do it at that level. And to others.

"Playing for Queensland Roar obviously I left one year into a two year deal to pursue something over in Scotland. It wasn't the best of terms I left on.

"And I did okay in the Scottish Premier League with Falkirk so there's no reason why I can't do it again over here."

Higgins played six games in the inaugural season for the Roar before joining Scottish Premier League club Falkirk. He left the club in January last year to link with Israeli club Maccabi Herzliya.

He returned to Australia in May and, after being overlooked for a Roar contract, was later snapped up on a short-term, injury-replacement deal by Adelaide United as cover for Daniel Beltrame.

Since then, he's played for the Gold Coast select team, coached by Miron Bleiberg.

"Miron brings personality. Certainly a big personality and someone who's coached at a high level with Queensland Roar. And to be fair, I think he was successful at Queensland Roar," said Higgins.

"The brand of football that first year was exciting to watch, even if we didn't make the finals. A few finishing touches to that team and who knows what would've happened with that side in the first year."

But Higgins – nicknamed Giggles – is most excited about the grassroots support already on the Gold Coast. And he recounts an anecdote from his day job with a sports manufacturer to illustrate the point.

"I go into a lot of sports stores on the Gold Coast as part of my job and so many shops are asking me about the demand for Gold Coast United shirts. They say, 'We've had kids asking if they can buy Gold Coast replica jerseys'.

"And we are 10 months away from the Gold Coast's first game.

"Even the local league grand final on the weekend got 3-4000 fans. It's going to be huge on the Gold Coast if they market it right."
