United management lodged a complaint to the government-run Stadiums Queensland following Sunday's fiasco which saw the game called off due to a waterlogged pitch after just 20 minutes.

The club claimed Stadiums Queensland's poor maintenance of the Skilled Park pitch meant the surface was unplayable following incessant rain.

It is believed should the costs for Sunday's game be waived, United owner Clive Palmer was interested in holding another A-League match free of charge for fans.

But the State Government has rubbished United's claim and hit back at the request which it labelled a 'ridiculous notion'.

"There was an A-League match called off at Dairy Farmers Stadium in January because of heavy rainfall," a Government spokesman told The Gold Coast Bulletin.

"There were no calls for compensation. The Australian PGA was postponed because of the rain. There were no calls for compensation.

"The Brisbane Bandits, who pull a similar crowd to Gold Coast United, had one game cancelled because of weather ... (again) there were no calls for compensation.

"The calling off of the game by the referee on Sunday is unfortunate but is no different to a cricket match being abandoned or other sports events being postponed because of the weather.

"We cannot continually move the goalposts at the whim of club owners to subsidise their commercial operations."

However, Gold Coast United boss Clive Mensink said those examples were completely different to the Skilled Park situation.

"In regards to the examples given, they haven't dealt with the fact the pitch is unacceptable," he said.

"A patchy surface, with mud and dirt in places is the true problem and is what caused the problem on Sunday.

"And as far as the club is concerned, those issues (raised by the State Government) are not relevant in terms of the condition of the pitch."
