Round 13 saw all of the league’s top five teams emerge victorious, opening the gap between the two halves of the table to ten points.
Brisbane Strikers defeated Whitsunday Miners 4-2, while Olympic FC scored two to beat Bundaberg Spirit. NQ Razorbacks edged out Capricorn Cougars in an eight goal thriller, Redlands City Devils netted one to narrowly claim victory over QAS while Sunshine Coast FC enjoyed a 5-0 win over Logan United.
Brisbane Strikers and Whitsunday Miners played out a goalless first half of football not short of excitement; the home team could’ve easily been 3-0 within the first 15 minutes. Russell Woodruffe scored two within minutes of the restart, closely followed by a Corey Hooper own goal and a tap-in from Chris Di Sipio which gave the Strikers 4-0 cushion. However, Miners substitute Michael VanMoolenbroek scored twice in ten minutes to give the Strikers a late scare.
Fourth-placed North Queensland Razorbacks hosted Capricorn Cougars in what turned out to be an eight goal game. Goals from four different scorers, and one own goal, gave the Townsville side the three points, highlighting the teamwork evident within the side. Capricorn Cougars scored through Joe Burke and a Brendan James double.
Olympic FC continued their formidable form, defeating Bundaberg Spirit 2-0 at home to keep pressure on the finals spots. A goal from midfielder Pablo Aviles and Shane Coffey’s fourth goal in as many games secured the game for Bobby Hamilton’s side. The result means Bundaberg Spirit stay bottom of the competition.
Shaun Blackman skyrocketed to the top of the QSL’s Golden Boot tally with a hat-trick against Logan United on Sunday afternoon. He has now scored 15 goals in 12 games. Ben Knight scored a double to make the end score 5-0 to the Kawana-based side. Despite the loss, it is obvious that Logan are a better side than the one that lost 8-0 to the same opposition in Round 8, keeping possession for longer periods of time with more attempts on goal.
The encounter between Redlands City Devils and Queensland Academy of Sport, ended as it did last time the two sides met – with a single goal deciding the game. Craig Thompson scored from a corner within the first five minutes of the game, and despite a strong fight from the young QAS boys, the goal ended up being the decider. QAS coach Mike Mulvey said that his side’s impressive performance “showed that they can compete with every team in the league”.
