Ranieri was today appointed as the replacement for Gian Piero Gasperini and the hugely experienced 59-year-old has been tasked with turning around Inter's dismal start to the season.

Gasperini was dismissed in the wake of Tuesday's 3-1 defeat at newly-promoted Novara, Inter's fourth loss in five competitive games this term.

Ranieri, who will take over a side in the bottom six of Serie A with just one point, said: "It's been a bad start to the season for Inter and I will talk to the team to understand why that was.

"I will have to bring enthusiasm and change gear in order to wake up the team.

"I cannot promise that we will win this or that but I believe this team has a lot to give and we must prove it."

Inter's city rivals AC Milan are not in the best of shape either and they host lowly Cesena on Saturday hoping to return to winning ways after going three games without a victory.

Milan were held to a 1-1 draw by Udinese in midweek and will be desperate to recover Brazilian forward Alexandre Pato, who sustained a muscle injury in that game.

The defending champions are still without the services of injured strikers Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robinho.

Rock-bottom Cesena, meanwhile, travel to the San Siro as the only side still without a point to their name this season.

On Sunday, unbeaten Juventus make the trip to Sicily to face Catania on the back of a 1-1 home draw against Bologna.

That result ended Juve's winning start to the campaign but still left them joint-top of the standings, level on seven points with Udinese and Genoa.

Fiorentina go to the San Paolo stadium to face Napoli in upbeat mood following their 3-0 win over Parma, not least young star Stevan Jovetic who, after suffering a serious knee injury just over 12 months ago, ended his long goalscoring drought for the club with two goals in that game.

Genoa will attempt to make it three wins in a row when they meet Chievo in Verona.

Lazio host Palermo looking to pick up where they left off at Cesena on Wednesday, where the Romans celebrated their first win of the season in a 2-1 triumph at the Dino Manuzzi stadium.

Udinese's impressive defensive record could be put to the test at Cagliari.

The Friuli outfit currently have one of the best backlines in the division with just one goal conceded, but Cagliari have netted twice in each of their three games so far and could pose a threat to that statistic.

Elsewhere, Roma visit Parma, Lecce take on Siena and Novara, fresh from their first Serie A victory in over 50 years with that triumph over Inter, will be hoping for more of the same when they take on Atalanta in Bergamo on Sunday.
