Harry Redknapp blamed "scandalous" defending for Portsmouth's 4-0 Carling Cup third round defeat to Chelsea at Fratton Park.
Portsmouth were down to the bare bones and managed to keep Chelsea in check for the opening half hour before Michael Ballack won a contentious penalty.
Frank Lampard converted and that opened the floodgates, with Florent Malouda rifling home a second just before the interval.
Lampard bundled in a third after David James had failed to deal with a cross and Salomon Kalou wrapped up the victory with a deserved goal of his own after dancing unchallenged into the box.
Portsmouth have now conceded 10 in their last two matches.
"We had a makeshift midfield and we worked very hard but we gave away scandalous goals," said Redknapp, who was without Sean Davis, Papa Bouba Diop and Lassana Diarra.
"The first one wasn't a penalty. He left his foot in there and dived. After that the other goals were poor.
"We haven't been leaking goals all season but we have had two games now. Chelsea are a fantastic team, a different class, but the goals were poor.
"This was always the least important game for me. We didn't want to get smashed up and we did concede more goals away than we would like. But tonight is history for me now."
The penalty proved to be the turning point. Ballack toed the ball ahead and went down under a naive challenge from Nadri Belhadj.
"You are starting to think we might come in at 0-0 and we have done very well because they are a hard team to contain. But suddenly it is 2-0. The third goal was a joke," said Redknapp.
"People have been making mistakes in the last two games that don't usually make mistakes. Hopefully we can move on now."
Luiz Felipe Scolari was unhappy after Chelsea's Champions League victory over Bordeaux last week but he was a contented man tonight.
Scolari was pleased with Chelsea's approach and the manner in which they controlled the game once Lampard had rifled them into the lead.
"I am happy," said Scolari.
"Today we played very well. We weren't always trying to attack quickly. We worked the ball, had more of the possession, we were patient.
"This is what I want from my team and it is what they did today. The players gave me a good answer today."
Didier Drogba made his first start of the season while £9million Serbian defender Branislav Ivanovic was given a long-awaited first-team debut.
"Didier was better than the last two games when he came off the bench," said Scolari.
"Now he improves and it is better. In the future maybe we will see the same Didier as last season. Now I am happy. There is not a problem in his knee and his mind is clear, he did very well for me.
"Ivanovic did very well. He marks very well, jumps very well, controls the right-back position. He is different than (Juliano) Belletti and (Jose) Bosingwa [who are attacking right-backs] but for us it is important."
