United need all three points against Newcastle Jets tonight and must hope Gold Coast United defeat ninth-placed North Queensland Fury in Townsville on Saturday.

Vidmar says the club cannot hide from the position it finds itself in after a season to forget, but he believes there is new hope in the playing group and a belief that they can come away with victory against Newcastle.

"We've put ourselves in the worst possible position so we don't want to finish bottom and the boys are really confident after last week that they can go out and perform and get a win," Vidmar said.

"So all our focus has to be on is performing our duties very well and if we do that we've got a great chance of winning.

"Wherever we finish we finish and that's the way it has been but we can take a lot of confidence from last week going into this game."

But to beat the sixth-placed Jets, the Reds will need to score consecutive wins, something they have not been able to do all season.

Vidmar knows his charges will need to come to play, particularly with Newcastle determined to end a run of three straight defeats before commencing their finals campaign.

"It's not going to be an easy game because Newcastle are a very good football side, but certainly we feel that from this week at training that we can go out and perform very well," Vidmar said.

After playing 30 minutes against  Brisbane Roar last weekend, Argentinean Marcos Flores is in line to make his walk on debut for the Reds, Vidmar stating that the playmaker's inclusion would see Adam Hughes make way and take up a place on the bench.

Youngster Mathew Leckie is expected to again shoulder the load up front, although captain Travis Dodd will also be keen to get his name back on the score sheet after seeing the goals dry up in the past three games following a purple patch in mid January which saw him net three in three.

Dodd said the Reds are eager to get into a groove and continue the inroads they have made in their performances over the past month.

"We're going (to Newcastle) for the points. We want to win and finish the season on a high and also keep building momentum for our first Champions League game against Pohang," Dodd said.

"It was a good start for us to get the win last week against Brisbane, it has been a good training week on the paddock and we need to keep working on the things that we've been doing at training in the last couple of weeks and if we can get them to work in the games we should be alright."

The match will be the first time United have played the Jets at EnergyAustralia Stadium since round 13 of last season. That game finished 1-1 after former United defender Sasa Ognenovski scored a an equaliser in the dying seconds.
