EXCLUSIVE: Adelaide United must make replacing Sasa Ognenovski a top priority to fill the huge hole he will leave, says former skipper Ross Aloisi.
Ognenovski is bound for South Korea this week to begin a new challenge in the K-League and Aloisi says it will be some task for Aurelio Vidmar to find another player in that mould.
"They don't have a trophy to show for it, which is disappointing, but Adelaide United have had a magnificent season. Aurelio Vidmar and Phil Stubbins have worked very, very hard - the best pairing in the league," Aloisi told au.fourfourtwo.com today.
"It's just a shame there's no silverware to show for it."
As the dust settles on Saturday's Grand Final, thoughts are already turning to next season. The off season is likely to see plenty of transfer activity and Aloisi says it is vital that key players are both retained and replaced.
The ex Reds captain can only think of one Australian-based player who might fit the bill - an ex playing colleague of his at Wellington Phoenix.
"For me, Sasa Ognenovski is the biggest loss, no questiion. For me, he and Eugene Galekovic were so, so important this year," he said.
"The trouble is, I don't see too many other Ognenovski's out there. He is a leader, had presence and pace. The only A-League player who I can see fitting the bill is my old Wellington Phoenix teammate Karl Dodd.
"But getting in that type of defender is the first job for me. Then you need to look at the other end of the pitch. I think two strikers are needed, including an out and out goalscorer.
"Paul Agostino hasn't played as much as I'm sure everyone would have liked due to injury and they will need someone to fill his spot. Someone who can hold the ball up well.
"I know the club will already be looking at this situation and one thing you can see is that Aurelio recruited very well ahead of the season that's just finished."
