While the young Reds appeared to be in control for the majority of the game, they were made to survive a scare as the Jets refused to give in despite being 2-0 and then 3-1 down.
 
Evan Kostopoulos gave United’s Youth the dream start after just six minutes, before Joe Costa produced a spectacular overhead kick to put the home side two goals up inside the opening half an hour.
 
That remained the score heading into half time, Newcastle unlucky not to peg a goal back two minutes after the restart when Sean Rooney watched his header cannon into the crossbar.
 
Persistent pressure from the Jets eventually paid off when James Virgili struck in the 55th minute to make it 2-1, but it did not take long for the young Reds to restore their two goal buffer when Francesco Monterosso finished off a sweet United move, the National Youth League’s top scorer from the past two seasons slamming the ball into the back of the net, after getting on the end of a measured Liam Wooding pass from the left.   
 
Newcastle substitute Blake Green then set up a tense finale as he brought the score back to 3-2 in the 72nd minute, but that was the end of the scoring as United’s Youth wrapped up all three points.
 
The result sees the Reds Youth go equal on points with the second placed Jets, the young Reds with a bye next weekend before their next match against Perth Glory Youth in Perth on November 6.
