Upon Coolen's arrival to begin his Adelaide United coaching tenure, the Dutchman immediately started planning for both the short and long term future of the club in regards to playing personnel.

"A part of planning for the future is considering the players who were coming out of contract," Coolen said. "All clubs are in the same situation with out of contract players, it's not just us.

"But the club has allowed me to settle in and to take my time to analyse things well before taking any decisions, which shows a lot of confidence, and that makes me happy."

Nearly two months since Coolen took charge of the Reds, and he says his understanding with the players and recognition of his team's strength and weaknesses continues to grow each day.

But Coolen says this Hyundai A-League campaign is still in its early stages and he will not rush the process of extending contracts.

"I've been able to give the club my first opinions on the players, however we need some more time to make some final decisions, but more importantly good decisions, and there is still a long time before the next season," Coolen said.

"We've only just started this season so we won't be rushed into making decisions for the next season, unless we are absolutely sure they are the right ones."

Coolen is adamant the club will do its utmost to ensure the Reds remain in a strong position moving forward, which includes focusing on securing players coming out of contract at the end of this season.

"Of course we will do everything to keep our players with us," he said. "We have already commenced negotiations with out of contract players through their managers, and have held good discussions with several players.

"However, we have a plan and we will take the time necessary to make good decisions. We will make sure we will have a good squad for next season, and we are already working hard to achieve that."

He added: "We also understand that we need to work within the parameters of our budget.

"From the short time I have been here, what I feel already from the people of Adelaide is that this city is a very proud city and also very proud of its sporting teams, and in particular our fans are very proud of this club.

"This gives me a real good feeling and to be honest, we only want to work with players who are happy and really want to play for this club, because in my opinion the Adelaide United Football Club is a great club with hard working staff and fantastic supporters."
