After an intense training session this morning, the big defender pulled up with what looks like a recurrence of the hip flexor injury which kept him sidelined during the Pre-Season Cup and has been ruled out by coach Frank Farina for this weekend’s vital home clash.

The injury follows recent concerns for Danny Tiatto, Craig Moore and Andrew Packer, all of whom are expected to be fit for Sunday.

The blow has been softened by the return of youngster Luke DeVere from Australian under-20 duty, with Ben Griffin also in the mix.

Farina said he hadn’t yet made a final decision on a replacement.

“It’s always disappointing when you lose a player a couple of days out from the game but that’s why we’ve got a big squad,” Farina said.

“We’ve still got plenty of depth there with Benny Griffin, Luke DeVere and Andrew Packer’s back available now as well.”

After perhaps deserving more than the earned two points from the opening two games, Farina said the Roar was looking to take the game to the Mariners on Sunday.

“We’ll be going with a very attacking side on the weekend – the bench as well,” Farina said. “I think you’ll see some of the young boys either starting or playing some part in the game.

“Like everyone else we want to get a win on the board but we’re travelling all right. (After) two games, we’re only two points off top spot and you get three for a win.”

Standing between the Roar and three points will be the imposing figure of former Manchester United and Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Bosnich, who makes his A-League debut for the Mariners.

“Mark’s been there, done that so I don’t think nerves will be any part for him,” Farina said. “We saw him play against Sydney in the Pre-Season Cup and he was exceptional.

“They’re a good side. We’ve always had some very good tussles with them and I’m expecting it will be a difficult one again on Sunday.”

Roar midfielder Matt McKay said the team had to overcome the loss of McCloughan and get a win.

“The centre-halves keep changing, don’t they?” McKay said. “Whoever steps in whether it be (Griffin) or (DeVere)… they’ll prove a point and do well for us.

“There are only 10 home games this season and the first two games you could say we’ve dropped points so it’s a must-win for us.

“There’s an anger there and we want to prove not only to ourselves but to the Queensland public that we’re a good side and we can win games.”
