EXCLUSIVE: Roar keeper Liam Reddy reckons Wellington is no easybeat despite sitting second bottom - and they have a genuine goal threat in Shane Smeltz.
“Wellington will be pretty high on confidence after putting three past Glory last week,” Reddy, 26, told au.fourfourtwo.com before flying out of Brisbane for the New Zealand capital
"And Shane Smeltz, with two goals I thnk he's equal top goalscorer with Joel [Griffiths], so he'll be very confident.
“Sasa Ognenovski, Craig Moore, Hyuk-Su and myself – we're going to have our work cut out. It'll be an interesting game – actually it might be a pretty attacking game.”
Despite sitting in seventh on the ladder, entertaining Phoenix are second highest scorers with 21 goals, although Ricki Herbert's men have leaked 27 goals – the highest in the competition.
However, former Queensland favourite Smeltz sits atop the goalscorers' charts on seven alongside Joel Griffiths of the Jets.
Roar left Brisbane a day earlier than usual in the hope that an extra day in Wellington will pay dividends on Friday night at Westpac Stadium.
But they go into the clash without the defensive cover of Danny Tiatto, who has succumbed to a hamstring injury.
That said, the side will be full of confidence following last week's impressive 2-1 win over Central Coast at Suncorp.
Sitting second on the ladder with 26 points, a play-off spot appears a certainty for Frank Farina's side – their first finals appearance since the A-League kicked off in 2005.
However, Reddy is not getting too far ahead of himself.
“Wellington's a tough place to go and play," he added. "I think New Zealand is a difficult place to go to but in the past their teams haven't been that good.
"Usually we've been accustomed to going there and getting three points.
“But having said that, we dropped six points to New Zealand last year. That's where we lost it last season.
"So we'll be definitely be keyed up for a big game and won't be taking this New Zealand team lightly.”
Phoenix are set to record another significant milestone in its short history, with Friday night’s home match likely to see the 100,000th fan pass through the turnstiles at Westpac stadium.
The club needs just 6839 fans to crack the century, with 93,161 people having attended the Phoenix’s eight home games to date.
The A-League’s newest club has an average crowd figure of 11,645.
