The 26 year old former Queensland Roar striker, who has been playing in Romania's premier division Liga I with FC Universitatea Craiova, arrived in Adelaide yesterday afternoon to let coach Aurelio Vidmar see his skills.

While United is looking at Baird as a possible inclusion for the club's AFC Champions League 2010 campaign, Adelaide United Director of Football Michael Petrillo says that if Vidmar likes what he sees, the Reds could instead sign Baird for the A-League in January.

"We've got one spot left on our roster, he has to be an Australian player and Michael is a very versatile player who has played in the A-League previously and has been playing in a reasonably strong league in Romania," Petrillo said.

"We're just going to have a look, see what sort of shape he's in and then reassess at the end of the week."

Born and bred in Brisbane, Baird started his senior career in 2000 in the Brisbane Premier League before joining the Brisbane Strikers in the National Soccer League (NSL).

He had stints with fellow NSL clubs South Melbourne and Sydney Olympic before being one of Queensland Roar's initial signings ahead of the A-League's debut season.

After scoring six goals for Roar in the club's first season, Baird attracted interest from FC Universitatea Craiova, where he has been plying his trade since 2006 with a return of 12 goals from 63 appearances.

As well as striker, Baird can also play out wide and has represented Australia at Under 20 level. He is scheduled to depart Adelaide to return to Romania on Saturday afternoon.
