The 41-year-old World Cup winner had failed to score in his last five outings, which saw Vasco fail to reach the Campeonato Carioca semi-finals.

But Romario got the treasured strike as Vasco da Gama beat Sport Recife 3-1 in the second round of the Campeonato Brasileiro on Sunday.

After missing the opening Campeonato Brasileiro game, Romario converted a 48th minute penalty, which led to a 20 minutes delay in the game.

The former PSV Eindhoven and Barcelona player was presented with a special shirt with the number 1,000 on the back by club president Eurico Miranda and completed a lap of honour.

Romario had hoped to score the milestone goal while a guest player with Adelaide United last year, but only managed to hit the back of the net once, in his final game for the club.

Fellow Brazil legend Pele is the only other player to reach the tally, although Romario admits his tally includes goals scored in youth team, friendly and testimonial games.

"I'd like to thank all the people who have always been by my side - my parents, my children, everybody. I'm really shocked," said Romario.

"It's a great pleasure to achieve this mark only one man conquered (Pele)."

Vasco coach Celso Roth added: "I'm privileged to be at Vasco at this moment and live Romario's 1,000th goal. Actually, I haven't dreamt about this, but football gives you this kind of gifts."

Andre Dias' first half double had fired Vasco into a commanding lead before Romario struck, while Luciano Henrique grabbed an 81st minute consolation for Sport.

Vasco join Palmeiras, Corinthians, Botafogo, Atletico Paranaense and Parana at the top of the Campeonato Brasileiro with a 100% record after two games.

Jorge Valdivia's brace handed Palmeiras a 2-1 win over Figueirense despite Peter's 67th minute consolation, while a double from Marcelo Mattos and a solitary strike from Everton handed Corinthians a 3-0 win at Cruzeiro.

Elsewhere, Botafogo beat Atletico Mineiro 2-1 courtesy of goals from Dodo and Lucio Flavio, while newly-promoted Nautico claimed a surprise 1-0 win over defending champions Sao Paulo.

Flamengo saw-off Goias 3-1 to claim their first win of the championship and Carlos Eduardo and Tuta handed Gremio a 2-0 victory over Fluminense.
