Aziz Behich also put in a full shift at left-back for PSV in his starting debut, a 4-0 win at Excelsior Maassluis in the Dutch Cup.

Sainsbury played the full 90 minutes at centre-back, netting his side's second goal with a header from a corner in the 44th minute.

"It was nice to get the win and a clean sheet for a defender for myself is always nice," Sainsbury said.

"Ninety minutes under my belt is what I need so it's a good night. The goal is a nice little cherry on top."

He added: "This is my first 90 minutes since the World Cup so it's important to get that rhythm and my fitness also."

Elsewhere, Denis Genreau was a 61st minute substitute and Dean Bouzanis was an unused sub as PEC Zwolle won 1-0 at Staphorst.

In the Swiss Super League overnight, Tomi Juric made his first club appearance in five months as FC Luzern lost 2-1 at FC Basel.

Juric was a 63rd minute substitute for Luzern following knee and hamstring injuries.

The big striker had scored for Luzern's Under-21's side earlier this week from the penalty spot.

Tom Rogic was a 75th minute substitute as Celtic won 1-0 at St Johnstone, while Oliver Bozanic was an 92nd minute substitute and Ben Garuccio sat on the bench as Hearts defeated Motherwell 4-2 in the Scottish League Cup.

Elsewhere, Adam Federici put in a full shift as Stoke City exited the English League Cup with a 3-2 loss at Nottingham Forest.

Aleksandar Jovanovic, James Donachie and Matt Jurman played full games in leagues around Asia.
