The Bundesliga club had an initial bid rejected by the Dutch champions, however, they have finally got their man for a fee believed to be worth around 10million euros.

Schalke confirmed Farfan would sign a contract with the club at the end of the month, pending a medical, on their official website on Tuesday.

And manager Andreas Muller believes the Peru international, who scored 57 goals in 118 league games with PSV, will provide a versatile threat to his attack.

"He has shown his qualities in Holland and in the Champions League quite often," Mueller said.

"When he makes it through the medical, and I think he will, we have signed a player who can play in more than one position in the attack."

Earlier Farfan had confirmed he was moving to Germany in the hope of finding more competitive football.

He told www.peru.com: "I accepted the offer (from Schalke) because I wanted to play in a more competitive league.

"I had offers from other clubs. There was an offer from Tottenham in England, another from Fiorentina in Italy and one more from a Russian club.

"What I decided with PSV was to look for a competitive team and obviously in a league which was a level above Dutch football, and for sporting reasons we accepted the offer from Schalke 04.

"I want to begin a new era in my life. With PSV I won four championships, I was the club's top-scorer, I always had the support of my team-mates and the fans.

"It went well for me in Holland and I think that it was about time to leave and look for new horizons."
