The 24-year-old striker has been at the centre of a great deal of transfer speculation this summer, with first Manchester United and then Chelsea linked with the player.

The Blues, who last month confirmed they had held talks with Madrid about the Brazil international, have not given up hope of bringing Robinho to Stamford Bridge, but Schuster is not ready to give him up just yet.

"I've talked with him and he knows perfectly that he is an important part of our plans," said the Madrid coach.

"He is a key player and we are not thinking about if he leaves or not."

Madrid triumphed 2-1 over Hamburg in the Emirates Cup on Saturday.

Robinho, who has been suffering from a groin injury, started on the bench but came on in the 73rd minute.

And although he did not get his name on the scoresheet, he looked well on the way back to physical fitness.

"He is working hard," continued Schuster. "Today he played his first minutes and you saw the real Robinho.

"After having only been able to train a couple of days, you have to give him playing time and little by little he will get back into the team.

"Tomorrow he will also have playing time, it's good that he's picking up the pace of the game as quickly as possible."

Madrid face Arsenal on Sunday in their second Emirates Cup fixture.
