LUIZ Felipe Scolari defended Chelsea's globetrotting pre-season tour after running up a second comfortable victory over Chinese Super League side Chengdu Blades on Saturday.
Four days after kicking off their five-game tour of Asia and Russia with a 4-0 win over Guangzhou Pharmaceutical, the Blues demolished the Blades in emphatic style as Nicolas Anelka, Solomon Kalou, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Franco Di Santo and Shaun Wright-Phillips all netted to secure a 7-0 win in Macau.
The victory will fuel reports Scolari is facing dressing room unrest with several senior players believed to be unhappy after travelling to China, Macau, Malaysia and Russia ahead of the Barclays Premier League opener against Portsmouth on August 17.
But despite making eight changes during the win at the Macau Stadium, Scolari insisted the tour is an important building block ahead of the long Premier League season after only taking over the Chelsea reins less than a month ago.
"Because I am new to Chelsea I need to learn about my players. I have an idea about my players, but I need to work everyday with them to learn more," said the former Portugal coach.
"These games are important for me. If I was able to chose the opposition, I would choose this team at this time in our pre-season.
"I don't not want to play against strong teams because my players are not fully match fit.
"For us, this is match training. We are here not only to play games, but for other things and for me it is better as I build my team for the games in Russia, and after Russia for the first game against Portsmouth.
"Six, seven or eight substitutions in this type of game is normal. If I was at the training ground at Cobham I would do the same against the teams we play there."
Chelsea complete their three-game Asian tour against a Malaysia Select XI in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday before they travel to Moscow to face Lokomotiv Moscow and AC Milan or Sevilla in the Railway Cup at the start of August.
"It was better than the match on Wednesday," Scolari added.
"The players played more freely, they are fitter and in better condition and they moved up one step so I am satisfied with this game."

Despite linking Wright-Phillips with a move to Portsmouth, Scolari insists he is unaware the former Manchester City midfielder wants to leave Stamford Bridge.
Harry Redknapp has revealed his admiration for Wright-Phillips while new Portsmouth striker Peter Crouch believes his England team-mate would be a valuable addition to the squad.
"I have not asked him if he wants to go to another team," said Scolari.
"He is here and is playing for Chelsea, I don't know anything about him wanting to go to another team.
"He is training very well every day, he is a very important player for us. This is the first time I have heard anything about Wright-Phillips wanting to move.
"I will have to ask Shaun if he wants a change."
Meanwhile, Scolari confirmed defender Jose Bosingwa is set to miss the Premier League opener against Portsmouth after been ruled out for three weeks with a thigh injury.
The 25-year-old right back, who joined Chelsea from FC Porto over the summer, left the Blues' pre-season tour of Asia and Russia and returned to London after being diagnosed with a small tear in his upper thigh suffered against Guangzhuo.
"He is out for two weeks minimum for treatment and he won't be able to play for three weeks," said Scolari. "At the moment he is out for the first game against Portsmouth."
