The Rangers full-back grabbed the opener to ease the pressure on George Burley's shoulders just days after the national team boss claimed he was a player of "limited ability."

Barry Robson doubled the advantage with the rebound from a saved James McFadden penalty before skipper Stephen McManus was dismissed and Eidur Gudjohnsen netted from the spot to set up a tense finale.

Afterwards Burley was pleased at the way his players reacted to the defeat by Macedonia.

He said: "We didn't pass it as well as we can at times but it was a battling performance.

"Iceland worked hard but it was three points, which we needed.

"It was our second away game after a tough game in Macedonia.

"The boys battled very hard, especially after we went down to 10 men but we got the three points which is encouraging."
