SERGIO Van Dijk has handed Queensland Roar a pre-match boost ahead of their clash with Sydney FC.
Scans on van Dijk’s injured right cheekbone showed no bone damage after the striker collided with Robert Cornthwaite in Wednesday’s A-League match against Adelaide United at Hindmarsh Stadium.
The Dutch striker lost consciousness briefly after the head clash, but team doctor Mark Young cleared van Dijk to play after he successfully completed neurological testing.
While the news was good for van Dijk, Liam Reddy will be watching Saturday’s match from the stands after the coaching and medical staff decided not to risk the Roar custodian ahead of a potential finals series appearance.
Reddy has been recovering from a left hamstring strain and, although he successfully completed today’s training session, the coaching staff decided the risk of losing Reddy for an extended period was too big to take.
The goalkeeper will take part in full training next week to be available for the match against Perth on January 24.
Griffin McMaster will start in goals as he has in the past two matches, with short-term injury replacement Matt Ham on the bench.
Meanwhile, coach Farina believes fatigue won’t be a big factor when the Roar play their third match in seven days against Sydney FC at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.
The blockbuster match completes a marathon week for the Roar including two tough away trips to the Central Coast and Adelaide.
However, Farina said the return of experienced defensive pair Josh McCloughan and Danny Tiatto would give the squad a fresh edge.
The pair will start after returning from injury, while Scottish No.10 Charlie Miller is likely to come off the bench for his first appearance in six weeks.
Farina said: “They seem pretty fresh, mentally fine but physically it’s tough.
“With two or three new faces coming in, that does help the group but I think with what’s at stake, the adrenaline will just kick in irrespective of how they’re physically feeling.”
The Queenslanders are four points from first but the Roar boss said the team would push hard to put pressure on the top two.
“With two games to go we’ve got ourselves in a very good position,” he said. “We’ve come off the three road trips against the top three teams in pretty good shape points-wise.
“(First-placed) Adelaide’s got it very tough, they’ve got two away trips to Wellington and the Central Coast and Melbourne (second) are in the same position as us – two home games – but they’re against Central Coast and Wellington as well.
“So there are some massive games coming up but the confidence in the group is really high and the experience of last year, what we went through as a group, I think has been of major benefit, particularly for the younger players.
“We’re going to have to really bring our A game to Suncorp tomorrow, but as I said, confidence is high and we want to win these last two games.”
Roar’s task will be made harder by the absence of Tahj Minniecon (hip flexor) and Luke DeVere (hamstring), who pulled up injured after Wednesday’s game.
Minniecon was hopeful of a recovery but Farina said the turnaround between matches gave the speedy youngster no chance.
