But the presence of former Gold Coast United forward Joel Porter at the Red’s training session today will have done nothing to dampen speculation about the future of the Dutch import.

Van Dijk has declared himself off limits to the media until his return from Asian Champions League duty in Tashkent next week.

The player has been linked with several south-east Asian clubs and recently flew to Indonesia to sort out his Indonesian citizenship in a bid to play with the national team.

Kosmina said while the two left-footed strikers were “similar types of players” nothing should be read into Porter’s appearance at training.

“No, it’s to help Joel out,” he said. “I’ve known him for years and I actually tried to sign him in the first season of the A-League when he was at Hartlepool but we couldn’t come to terms on it.

“He’s been a good player. He’s a local boy living back home now, he’s had a few niggles that he hasn’t been able to get on top of.

"He’s not here to trial. I already know what Joel’s like as a player, if that was the situation. He’s a quality player and a good bloke and I want to help him.

“Joel’s had a few calf niggles over the last two years and he’s not just done it once, he’s done it two or three times so I think Joel’s full condition even to get back to A-level is quite a few months away."

As for whether Porter might be joining the Reds, Kosmina said: “We’ve got a full roster so I’m just trying to help a former South Australian that’s come back home who’s probably got a year or two left in him whether it be at this level or the next one down remains to be seen.”

That "full roster" includes Van Dijk who is increasingly linked to a move away from the club. But a spokesman for Adelaide United told au.fourfourtwo.com there were no offers on the table for the 30-year-old.

“He’s contracted here until the end of the season and as far as the club’s concerned at the moment he’s a required player,” the spokesman said.

“If there’s an approach – if there’s an offer – the club will consider it but until then he’ll be playing here.

“If and when anything happens we’ll make a statement if a different club comes in with an offer for him.”

He added: “(Van Dijk) doesn’t really want to say anything about it.

"When we come back from Tashkent it might be different, but at this stage he just wants to go about his business, train and hopefully do well next Wednesday."

Despite being one of the league’s most prolific goal scorers, with a strike rate of one every two games, Van Dijk has played a marginal role since the arrival of Kosmina.

Yet his consistency in front of goals has been a stand-out, scoring 25 in each of his two-year stints with first Brisbane (Queensland) Roar and then Adelaide.

At the end of last season Van Dijk fuelled further speculation about his Reds future by going public about his wife’s desire to leave Adelaide.

At one stage he expressed an interest in returning to the Netherlands but has since been linked to Indonesian Super League clubs Sriwijaya FC and Persib Bandung.
