Juventus were left frustrated by a 0-0 stalemate at Parma in Serie A on Wednesday while Atalanta defeated Genoa.
The match at the Stadio Ennio Tardani presented Juventus with a chance to regain the Serie A lead from AC Milan, but the draw leaves them trailing Massimiliano Allegri's side by one point, although Juve have a game in hand.
Giorgio Chiellini came closest early on for Juve when he thundered his header into the post on four minutes while Emanuele Giaccherini and Andrea Pirlo both had penalty appeals turned down.
Mirko Vucinic and Alessandro Matri had golden chances to score in the first half but came up short, and a trademark Pirlo free kick deflected off the top of the bar with Parma goalkeeper Nicola Pavarini flailing.
Parma's Sebatian Giovinco wanted a penalty for the hosts on 71 minutes when he was pulled by Andrea Barzagli just moments after he had a shot cleared off the line, but the referee was not fooled by his late fall.
Pirlo felt he was shoved in the dying minutes in the box but his appeals were also waved away with both sides settling for a point.
Elsewhere, Atalanta earned an important 1-0 win over mid-table Genoa that sees them pull further clear of the drop zone.
It took substitute Guido Marilungo to break Atalanta's 367-minute goalless drought in Serie A late in the second half to seal the points.
The Italy under-21 played a neat one-two with Denis in the 78th minute and fired low into the bottom corner to help Atalanta to a much-needed win.
