Already without Archie Thompson and Matthew Kemp through injury, Victory lost Kruse in the dying stages of the 2-0 defeat in Sydney after a challenge with Terry McFlynn. The visitors were far from happy with the tackle that led to the injury.
Melbourne coach Ernie Merrick refused to shake hands with Terry McFlynn after the game, exchanging harsh words with the Northern Irishman.
Asked Kruse's condition, a grim-faced Merrick replied: "The first impression is that he has a broken leg."
Pressed for his view on the tackle and his clash with McFlynn, the Victory boss responded bluntly: "I've got no comment to make. I've got nothing to say about that."
Merrick will have Kevin Muscat back for the first game of the finals, at home to Sydney on Thursday night.
