The level of his contribution to Phoenix's inaugural year was reflected by scooping four of the five awards up for grabs.

Along with player of the year, he was also the players' player of the year, the media player of the year and the golden boot recipient for his nine goals from 19 matches.

Goalkeeper Glen Moss prevented Smeltz from a clean sweep when he was named the fans' player of the year.

Using a 3-2-1 voting system on each of the 21 games, which was chosen by coach Ricki Herbert and assistant Wayne O'Sullivan, Smeltz received 42 votes and finished ten ahead of Moss, while it was particularly tight in the players' player gong where Smeltz was only four ahead on 168.

The 26-year-old marksman's haul adds to his New Zealand footballer of the year title, where he beat out Blackburn Rovers captain Ryan Nelsen and Celtic striker Chris Killen.

Ricki Herbert, who coached Smeltz at both the Phoenix and with the All Whites, said Smeltz and Moss were the clear standouts in a rollercoaster first season in the A-League.

"Both had overseas opportunities that hadn't gone as well as they'd have liked and had the chance to perform with Phoenix. That's exactly what they did and from a consistency point of view they were superb throughout the season," Herbert said.

"Shane proved himself as one of the best strikers in the A-League and winning four out of five of the club awards is proof that his talent and quality is recognised by everyone.

"He'll continue to go from strength to strength and will really benefit from our early preparation for the upcoming season. He's proven his ability to create opportunities and to finish them. We are expecting even better performances from Shane in season two.

"Glen was superb in goal and played more games [20 out of 21 regular season games] than anyone else in the squad. Each and every time he was first-class and regularly made telling contributions at the back."
