Inter Milan forward Sneijder was carried off on a stretcher after scoring in Holland's 3-0 win over Japan in Enschede.

Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk initially said he was concerned about the ankle injury and that it "did not look good".

But a statement on Inter's website revealed that he could now be back in midweek.

The statement read: "The midfielder underwent X-rays (which were subsequently sent to Inter's medical staff) and the good news is that he has done no serious damage.

"The player will remain with the Dutch national team until Monday to undergo further tests, after which his national team's medical staff will decide whether he is be fit to play next Wednesday's World Cup qualifier against Scotland".
