Matildas Captain Lisa De Vanna has signed for A-League aspirants South Melbourne signifying the former NSL powerhouse’s intent to gain a W-League licence.
De Vanna's signing highlights the ambitions of the Victorian outfit, with the veteran striker expected to play for her new club as early as this weekend.
With three World Cup and two Olympic games apperances to her name and 40 international goals, De Vanna brings a wealth of experience to South Melbourne's NPL team.
The star striker was unveiled in front of 300 people at South’s new $2m social club facility alongside Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou and South Melbourne A-League bid chairman Bill Papastergiadis.
The Matildas legend, who has played over 120 games for Australia and turned out for W-League side Canberra United last season, says she aims to take the club to a higher plane.
"I want to push South and the players to the next level,” the 32-year-old said.
"Developing the game and its culture is what I am passionate about and South is the club which has the facilities and infrastructure to provide the pathway for me and my future.
"I want to leave a legacy at South. I love the game and I want to grow the culture and support at South."
Papastergiadis said De Vanna’s signing signifies the club’s ambitions.
"The club has a history of excellence and has always attracted the best in the country. The signing of Lisa reveals that the club continues this standard,” he said.
“South is all about excellence and ambition. It is hungry for success. Lisa showcases the club’s desire to play in the W-League.
"South has produced 52 Socceroos. But the women's game is just as important now, hence, to have one of the most decorated Matilda's playing for us, is a huge honour."
Papastergiadis said Gabrielle Guiliano, head of South’s Women’s football department, was responsible for getting the signatures of both De Vanna as well as former Melbourne Victory player Alexandra Gummer.
"It is the fierce desire for the club to play in the W League and South club director Gabrielle Guiliano has resulted in this signing,” he said.
"South invests in women's football as much as it does in men's.
“Gabrielle will do whatever is needed to get South in the W League. It is also the culture of excellence which Gabrielle has created which has led to so many W League players joining the club.”
