EXCLUSIVE: South Melbourne FC celebrate their 50th anniversary this weekend with the former NSL club still wanting to produce the next generation of Socceroos.
To see some of South's highlights...
The club's gala anniversary at Melbourne's Crown Palladium will feature former South greats such as former Socceroos Paul Trimboli and Con Boutsianis among the expected 700 guests.
The night will be MC'ed by Les Murray with video and photo montages of the club over the years as well as Cirque du Soleil style entertainment.
It's unclear however if the club's dual championship winning coach and current Brisbane Roar coach Ange Postecoglou will be at the event due to his A-League commitments.
Club spokesperson George Triantos told au.fourfourtwo.com that the VPL club will look to build its traditions over the next 50 years - despite missing out on the city's second A-League franchise.
"There's a redevelopment of our ground right now which will add a another stand opposite the current main stand, which itself is being redeveloped," said Traintos. "So there are commercial opportunities there for the social rooms.
"And we continue to prosper with our junior and women's teams ... despite not being in the A-League we feel we can still contribute by grooming young talent for the national team.
"And this celebration will be something special... it's taken over a year to organise."
Current Socceroos Michael Petkovic and Patrick Kisnorbo came through the South system as did fringe Socceroo Danny Allsopp.
South Melbourne won the NSL four times and the national cup twice. At state league level, they've been prolific, winning the Victorian title eight times.
At international level, South took out the Oceania Cup and represented the region at the 2000 World Club Championships. At Rio's Maracana stadium, the club took on Necaxa, Vasco da Gama and Manchester United at the inauguaral FIFA tournament.
