Spencer, who recently made the decision to hang up his boots due to an ankle injury, played for both the Jets and Central Coast Mariners and is confident both can hold their own in the Asian Champions League.

However, it is his most recent club's activity in the transfer market that has impressed him the most.

"I like what Dutchy (Gary van Egmond) has been able to do. He's brought in players with great experience such as Ljubo Milicevic and Ang Costanzo, Topor-Stanley as well," he told au.fourfourtwo.com today.

"There's some six-foot monsters back there. But then you've also got an out and out goalscorer at the other end of the pitch in Sasho Petrovski.

"I think the physical presence will help them make an impact, combined with the technique you have in there."

He added: "Newcastle also have players who offer versatility, which is also an important factor.

"I don't know too much about the other teams in the group but, yes, I think they can do it (progress to the next stage).

"You always want to get off to a good start and it should be a good one to watch with the Griffiths brothers all in there. I think a draw in Beijing would be a good result for Newcastle."

Spencer will also be wishing Central Coast Mariners well and says they too will be tough opponents to knock over.

"Like Newcastle, they are a big side with that presence and that could be difficult for opponents to deal with," he said.

Spencer admits he's love to be part of the ACL adventure but he has moved on and is looking to the next chapter.

He will be coaching youngsters while playing football in the Woollongong area after an amicable parting of the ways from EnergyAustralia Stadium.

"I've no regrets and I wish Newcastle all the best for the Champions League," he said.
