The 33-year-old confirmed his decision after last night's 1-0 defeat away to Slovenia which ended Serbia's hopes of Euro 2012 qualification as they finished third in Group C behind Italy and Slovenia.

"It was my last game for my country," Stankovic said in Corriere dello Sport. "I was waiting for my farewell encounter and this was it.

"I've played in many matches, I've helped the team and I think now is the time to just think about Inter.

"There are younger players than me who need to start preparing for the World Cup campaign in Brazil.

"It's time for a generation change, it's time to leave some space for the youngsters."

Stankovic made his senior debut in 1998 and has scored 15 goals in 102 appearances for Serbia.
