Barely an hour after Barcelona striker Henry was officially withdrawn from the squad - the exact nature of his injury has not been revealed - Inter Milan midfielder Vieira announced he would not feature against England on Wednesday because of a thigh strain.

Since an enlarged 39-man squad was announced on Thursday, Louis Saha, Mathieu Valbuena (groin), Karim Benzema (knee), Bacary Sagna (ankle) and Sebastien Frey have all gone down with injuries, and Portsmouth midfielder Lassana Diarra (thigh) is expected to join the list.

It leaves coach Raymond Domenech with a number of selection posers, especially up front.

"I called up 39 players (originally) - I should have taken 45, and even that may not be enough," said Domenech.

"It's a difficult period at this time of the year. The weather, the crowded fixture calendar. I could foresee all this happening.

"But it is not catastrophic at the moment. It gives other players a chance."

Henry has been replaced in the squad by Loic Remy, the young Lyon forward who is currently on loan at Lens. It is Remy's first call-up by his country.

Juventus' David Trezeguet was drafted in by Domenech as a replacement for Benzema, who hurt his knee in Lyon's Ligue 1 match against Paris St Germain on Sunday.

Trezeguet, France's third top goalscorer of all time, last played for Les Bleus in their 1-0 defeat to Scotland in September.

But he has not featured since as he has not been willing to play for the 'A' team, with Henry, Benzema and Nicolas Anelka ahead of him in the pecking order for the senior side.

"It's been a problem of competition," Domenech said of Trezeguet's absence in recent squads.

"But I know what he can do. The opportunity is there."

If Domenech decides to go with a 4-4-2 formation on Wednesday, Trezeguet, the joint top scorer in Serie A this season, may start against England.

Marseille's Djibril Cisse should also come into contention but recent Chelsea recruit Anelka looks to be a definite starter with Henry and Benzema out.

"I think I have shown the coach what I can do already so there is no real pressure on me," he told PA Sport.

"Even if Thierry and Benzema had have been available, I hope I would have played. It will have depended on the system we go with."

Anelka welcomed the prospect of partnering Trezeguet up front on Wednesday, adding: "He is a good striker who always scores goals.

"He is doing it at Juventus, where he is the top scorer in Italy, and he has done it with the French national team.

"I'm sure it will not be a problem for him to come back and perform."

Vieira, who has been battling injury all season, did not start for Inter in their Serie A match against Juventus on Saturday.

And he is not ready to risk making his thigh problem any worse by playing on Wednesday.

"It's a big disappointment for me," he said.

"I really wanted to play because I need to play games. It's a bit frustrating but I am staying with the squad and I can still do a bit of work.

"I am hoping to play next weekend but there is no point taking pointless risks this week."

Before Wednesday's main event at the Stade de France, Domenech will watch France's 'A' team take on Mali in Charlety, Paris on Tuesday.
