Voller told www.feelfootball.com that the calendar needed to be standardised.

He said: "For the players in teams participating in the Champions League, UEFA Cup and internationals there are definitely too many matches and several competitions are extended unnecessarily.

"This shouldn't be the case. The solution is to cut the number of clubs in the leagues down to 18."

He continued: "You can only create a structured calendar with a break when there are fewer matches and this is difficult for some leagues because they have too many matches."

Eto'o agrees that something must be done to prevent clashes between club and national teams as often happens during the African Nations Cup.

The Cameroon international said: "I feel it is crucial to create a calendar in which nobody is penalised.

"Maybe they could plan it as in the European Championship.

"It is important though to mention that our role is not to plan but to play. It is not our task to bring solutions to these issues."
