NORTH Queensland Fry coach Franz Straka has emphasised the key role of newly-signed former Australian national youth team star Gareth Edds to the club next season.
Edds, 29, joins Fury on a one-year deal from English League One side Tranmere Rovers after a 12 year career in English football as a versatile midfielder who is can defend as well as score goals.
The Sydney-born playmaker began his playing days at the Australian Institute of Sport before being poached by Nottingham Forest in 1997 where he spent five seasons.
After year-long stints at Swindon Town and Bradford City, Edds enjoyed four successful years at MK Dons, helping them avoid relegation in 2005 with a crucial goal late in the season.
Fury head coach Franz Straka said Edds and recently signed former Walsall skipper Mark Hughes were pivotal to the future of the club.
"Both players bring to the squad experience from their time in English football and it is a strong message that we can bring these quality players to Fury in the prime of their careers," he said.
"Gareth gives us a lot of options as he is solid in defence or midfield and has also proven he can score important goals. He has enjoyed a good career in England and comes to us at the peak of his game.
"Mark is a quality young defender who impressed me with his leadership and maturity. His experience as captain of the Everton reserve team and development since made him a top priority for the club."
Mark, Gareth and fellow newcomer Chris Payne are expected to make their debut for the club during Fury's pre-season friendly against Whitsunday Miners in Mackay on Thursday July 8.
