FORMER Brisbane Roar defender Stuart McLaren is poised to become North Queensland Fury's new assistant coach - although it remains unclear who has landed the top job.
Fury interim chief executive Archie Fraser believes it is a key appointment for the club.
''It was key that we got an Australian coach that understood the A-League and to take that further still, it was important to have an Australian who understands Queensland,'' Fraser told the Townsville Bulletin.
The paper states that McLaren was hand-picked for the job by Football Federation Australia National Technical Director Han Berger.
''He came very highly recommended by Han,'' Fraser said.
''The way he delivered the content at his A level coaching course really impressed. He is thought to be one of the young Australian coaches with the greatest potential."
McLaren is expected to run the footballing show at the club until a new coach is confirmed. That man is expected to come from overseas.
