ADELAIDE United assistant boss Phil Stubbins is convinced the Reds have what it takes to haul themselves out of the A-League basement despite the home defeat by Newcastle Jets.
It is the fourth time United have suffered a 2-0 defeat at home this season, the result leaving Stubbins admitting there would need to be some serious soul searching done amongst the group, but he remained adamant that the Reds could dig themselves out of their slump.
"Can we get out of it from here - yeah I think we can. Things have to change, certainly. There's some soul searching and some questions that need to be asked and some honest answers need to be forthcoming if we are to get out of it," Stubbins said.
"It's a difficult position that we're in at the moment and probably the cliché is that we need to keep fighting and stay positive, but that's exactly what we need to do.
"At the end of the day it's a position that history suggests is something we have not had before, so we're in a bit of hole and we need to dig ourselves out."
The assistant coach admits performances have fallen short of expectations.
"We have not become a bad team overnight. I think our performances throughout the season have not really risen to the heights that we'd hoped for, I think we're certainly down on confidence at the moment and as a consequence we'd not had the string of results that we'd hoped for," Stubbins said.
"The opportunities befell us again and not taking your opportunities compounds the pressure and then we succumbed to a sucker punch so to speak on the stroke of half time which was extremely disappointing.
"Obviously we finished off the game in a poor fashion, the second half really wasn't good enough, but having said that, every which way we turn we hit the bar or miss the chance, everything seems to be going against us."
The Reds must now head back to the drawing board before facing Brisbane Roar next Saturday night at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.
