SURAT Sukha made his Melbourne Victory debut in a commanding 3-0 win as the A-League champions overpowered a Victorian Premier League select XI in Shepparton.
A crowd of more than 2,000 fans watched Victory jump to a 2-0 lead via goals to Leigh Broxham and Nathan Elasi before a goal late in the second half to Petar Franjic rounded out the scoring.
Broxham scored from a corner to give Victory the advantage on 30 minutes when his corner caught the strong wind at Deakin Reserve and floated over the heads of VPL goalkeeper Neil Young and back-post marker Jerry Karpeh.
Three minutes later a cracking drive from Carlos Hernandez hit the crossbar and rebounded down on the wrong side of the goal-line, with Nathan Elasi first to the crumbs to slot home.
Victory had seen off half-chances for the VPL team Matt Foschini and Grant Brebner both having to make vital challenges in the final third.
Nicholas Kalmar had a shot deflected wide of the post to start the second half but Victory largely closed the game down, bar two good saves from second-half substitute Mitch Langerak.
Franjic scored in stoppage time when he was first to a ball at the back post to finish from close range.
Sukha, the 26-year-old Thai had barely been in Australia a week but slotted into the Victory midfield after being substituted into the game at half time.
''He's only been in Australia a week and to see him in the dressing room it's a bit different to what he's been used to,'' Victory midfielder Grant Brebner said of Sukha.
''It will probably take another couple of weeks to adapt. He's got a grasp of English and I have no doubt he'll be a good player for us.
''We always get a warm welcome when we come to Shepparton. I've been here numerous times for clinics and I think it's good for the people to see us up close.''
Broxham said while conditions were not easy, they fell favourably for his goal.
''I was a bit surprised to see it go in, I gave it a bit extra because of the wind and I was happy to see it float in.
''The supporters were quite vocal today. It's always good to come and play where there are fans who show their appreciation.''
