Susic replaces Miroslav Blazevic, who stepped down at the end of the qualifying campaign for the next summer's World Cup.

Bosnia-Herzegovina finished second in Group Five to earn a place in the play-offs, where they lost 2-0 on aggregate to Portugal.

A statement on the official website of the Bosnia-Herzegovina Football Federation read: "After hours of discussion the members of the executive committee chose Safet Susic."

The Federation confirmed Sergej Barbarez, Ljupko Petrovic and Blaz Sliskovic were also candidates for the post.

Susic, 54, a former Yugoslavia international, last coached Turkish side Ankaraspor.
