GOLD Coast United's preparations for their clash with the Central Coast Mariners on Saturday took a severe blow after fears five players had contracted swine flu.
Although Tahj Minniecon was the only player to be officially confirmed with the H1N1 virus, the other four - in Adam Griffiths, Joel Porter, Daniel Piorkowski and Matt Osman - all displayed similar symptoms with tests on Thursday set to confirm that diagnosis.
Gold Coast United physiotherapist, David Battersby, said the club had taken all the necessary precautions to prevent further spread of the virus.
"Tahj is confirmed as having swine flu and the other players concerned are being treated as if they also have the virus," Battersby said.
"It takes four days for test results for swine flu to come back, so in the interim we take the highest common denominator and assume that all the players with flu-like symptoms have the same thing.
"Joel Porter displayed the symptoms last night so he can be treated with Tamiflu, but all of them are now quarantined for a period of seven days from the day they contracted the virus.
"Daniel, Matt and Adam will be treated symptomatically and when they are no longer contagious they will return to the group. No-one else is showing any signs of the virus, but if they do, they too will be quarantined."
United's pre-season match against the Central Coast Mariners at Skilled Park this Saturday night (18 July) will go ahead as planned and is under no threat of cancellation.
Tahj Minniecon has been in at the centre of a club v country dispute where Gold Coast United coach Miron Bleiberg was determined he would not disrupt pre-season training by releasing Minniecon for a Young Socceroos trip to Argentina.
It's not clear if Minniecon would be fit to travel.
