Sydney FC were out to get their third straight win, while Brisbane Roar began their new tale after the departure of John Aloisi. Adam Le Fondre's header in the 16th minute opened the scoring for the Sky Blues, finishing off Michael Zullo's wonderful cross.

Despite calls for a handball, Matt McKay netted the equaliser off of his chest in the 35th minute.

Sydney had put their foot off the pedal and with Brisbane's pressure, the goal was deserved.

Brisbane applied more pressure on Sydney in the second half, which limited their ability to drive into their final third. But with some patience and composed passing, Sydney were able to flick the switch and regain their lead again through Le Fondre.

Redmayne denied Adam Taggart from the spot after a VAR delay and the Sky Blues were able to hold on for the three points.

SYDNEY FC

Andrew Redmayne - 8

Tipped over Ingham's header and made a few other saves. Tried to call for a handball on McKay but the VAR said otherwise. Saved Taggart's penalty to keep his side in the lead.

Aaron Calver - 4

Little bit of hesitation between the defence. Clumsily gave away a penalty with a clip to the back of the ankle.

Alex Wilkinson - 5.5

Hesitation and errors opened up some opportunities for Taggart.

Paulo Retre - 5

Won back possession well. Lacked quality in the final third and his decision-making wasn't up to scratch.

Michael Zullo - 6

Linked-up well with Ninkovic. Delightful cross into the box for Le Fondre's opener. Wasn't a match for Ingham on the night.

Josh Brillante - 6.5

Thwarted Roar's midfield runs. Had a much improved performance along with partner in crime, O'Neill.

Brandon O'Neill - 7.5

Great free-kick delivery. Terrific assist to Le Fondre for the second goal.

Siem De Jong - 7

Firm header towards goal, forcing a save. Had another chance in the second, but applied too much power and height. Was greatly involved in Sydney's persistence in attack.

Milos Ninkovic - 7

Produced some great passes, especially in the second half.

Alex Brosque - 7

Showed some creative flair and was involved in Sydney's attack.

Adam Le Fondre - 9

Tracked Zullo's cross well to finish cleverly. Superb work to invent a build-up play, heading towards Brosque in the 24th minute. Put Sydney into the lead for a second time with flick into the far post on a tight angle.

Daniel De Silva - 7

Involved in attacking play and battled well in the 2 v 1 situations.

BRISBANE ROAR

Jamie Young - 7.5

Palmed away De Jong's header and kept the scores level denying O'Neill. Really made some stunning saves throughout the match.

Dane Ingham - 7.5

Decent headed effort on goal. First time pass found McKay who scrambled in the leveller. Was one of Brisbane's shining lights with speed, vision and a beautiful first touch.

Daniel Bowles - 5.5

Well positioned at times, but the two Le Fondre goals were impossible to stop.

Jacob Pepper - 5

Quite solid bar the two goals. Copped a knock in the second half but looked fine to go on.

Jack Hingert - 6

Wonderful passing in the build-up play to the equaliser.

Joe Caletti - 5.5

Got involved, but was fairly quiet. Hopefully some built-up confidence after starting.

Alejandro Lopez Sanchez - 6.5

Had some good ideas and moments. Read the play well.

Matt McKay - 7

Ricocheted the ball off of his chest and found the back of the net. Kept busy and blocked lanes.

Eric Bautheac - 7

Great cross in for Ingham's chance. Brilliant cross to the back post in the lead up. Was involved in some great set-ups.

Connor O'Toole - 6.5

Great distribution and closing down. Had a great chance to get the lead, but his shot didn't dip enough.

Adam Taggart - 6

Had a chance to equalise, but his shot was too central. Was denied from the spot.

Nicholas D'Agostino - 6.5

Great chance to level with a toe-poke but was just off target and also had a few goal-bound headers.
