Sky Blues defender Alex Wilkinson says beating Western Sydney Wanderers in tomorrow night's derby will edge Sydney FC closer to becoming the greatest team in A-League history.
The Wanderers' 57 points from their 2012-13 premiership winning campaign is the current record for the 10-team competition.
With Sydney on 47 points and eight games left in the season, Wilkinson said overtaking their bitter rivals was the main inspiration behind wanting to beat Western Sydney in Saturday night’s derby.
“It’s a definite motivating factor for sure,” he said. “Not necessarily just for beating the Wanderers but to reach that 57-point milestone.
"If we win again this weekend it brings us closer. It’s not been spoken about before but we’ve put ourselves in such a great position that we’ve got a number of goals that we want to achieve now and we want to go through the season undefeated and we want to create history and become the best A-League team in history.
“It’s pretty hard to compare teams of the past so you’ve just got to stick to the facts and the numbers and that’s the Western Sydney Wanderers team of a few years ago, so that’s what we want to beat.
"It’s not just because it’s the Wanderers that we want to win, it it’s just another team in our way and another team to get to the end goal of what we want to achieve this season.”
As Sydney gets closer to achieving invincible status, Wilkinson said a defeat before the regular season ends won't relieve the pressure heading into the finals.
“I don’t necessarily agree with that notion at all,” he said. “We’ve been asked this ask a bit. A lot of people say that a loss can do you good before the finals but for us and for me I don’t agree with it.
"If you keep winning it keeps giving the boys individually more confidence and as a team more confidence. When you got that kind of confidence in a team environment then the results tend to follow.
“I would much prefer the way we are going than to lose a game. If we can continue going undefeated then it’s just going to take our belief and our confidence to a whole new level.”
Wilkinson also denied that the Sky Blues are motivated to win because it would put a dent in the Wanderers top six aspirations.
“To be honest we aren’t too worried what their situation is and what this game means to them,” he said. “It’s all about us and how we are going to win the game and how prepared we are for their strength and weaknesses.
“For us it’s just another team we have to beat. While the derby is fantastic for the fans and for the league in general and as a player you really enjoy these games for the huge crowd, at the end of the day it’s another game we have to win.”
