There were no Christmas miracles on offer in Wellington, with Sydney FC too strong for a valiant Phoenix at Westpac Stadium.

Wellington’s troubles on and off the pitch have been well documented, but Sydney were good value for the 4-1 win. Bobo netted a clinical hat-trick to take his season tally to 10 goals, while a sumptuous strike from Adrian Mierzejewski reminded everyone why he’s in contention for a Poland call-up.

After copping two early goals, Andrija Kaludjerovic headed Wellington back into contention just before the break. The Serbian is a ‘Nix sensation, and with five headed goals from eight all season, he’s literally head and shoulders above the rest of his teammates.
Excluding the Serb, the work-rate was the only positive for the Wellington faithful – Adam Parkhouse and Mark McGlinchey toiled endlessly to fashion opportunities – but the chasm in quality was ultimately insurmountable.
Graham Arnold’s side now reclaim a five point buffer between themselves and Newcastle Jets. Given the quality they’re showing at both ends of the pitch, it’s a substantial gap as their campaign season ticks towards the halfway mark.
