O'Connor, who appeared 42 times for the Socceroos between 1979 and 1985, has been head of the men's football program at the AIS since 1996 where he has helped develop many current A-League players and Socceroos.

It's expected the 53-year-old Australian Hall of Famer will have a key role in the club's new national youth A-League side as well as the mooted Sydney FC youth academy. He may also assist coach John Kosmina with the senior team.

Sydney FC returns to training on April 28 and it's tipped that O'Connor will take up his new role in May.

O'Connor continues a trend of former Sydney City figures joining Sydney FC. The former NSL club was run by Frank Lowy with Andrew Kemeny as his lieutenant, while both John Kosmina and O'Connor played for the side.
