It was a frustrating night for Sydney FC and their fans. They didn't show the stylish play that's been on display in previous matches, and Shanghai's tactics were designed to break up any attempts at beautiful football. The result still keeps them well in the hunt for a place in the quarterfinals, but they will need to find their finishing touch if they are to get past Urawa Reds in Japan in a fortnight. That is now a must-win match for them if they are to progress to the quarter finals. A goal against Shanghai tonight would have left them needing only a draw.
Sydney had 22 shots on goal to Shanghai's 4 and 10 on target to Shanghai's 3. Shenhua made six saves to Bolton's one, Sydney had 10 corners to Shanghai's 2...and Sydney had 52% of the possession - but still couldn't find a goal.

Sydney will regret their missed penalty but the replays show they didn't deserve to get it anyway. However, once again they have dominated the game and created almost all the chances in the game - but have nothing so far to show for it. The game threatened to get very nasty near the end with late tackles coming in and play acting to the max. Sydney will be hoping their finishing improves in the second half - they're clearly the more dangerous side, but just haven't had the breaks. Carney's shot that was deflected clear with a marvellous reflex save while wrong-footed was Sydney's best chance, after the penalty. Shanghai have looked capable and occasionally threatened but have so far yet to force a good save out of Bolton.
