Controversy followed Taggart’s move from hometown club of Perth to Brisbane in the off-season with Glory owner Tony sage lashing out at the striker for what he felt was a betrayal.

Sage called the 2014 World Cup striker a liar for not revealing he was leaving the club but Taggart claimed that the club knew he headed for the exit.

Speaking to FTBL ahead of the season opener the striker revealed that the Roar showed greater belief in him following his time on the side lines.

“Brisbane Roar showed the faith in me even when I was injured last season when everyone else really didn’t to be honest,” he said.

“I wanted to repay that faith by joining the club that wanted me through good times and bad.

“Brisbane wanted to sign me throughout the whole year. Perth came in last minute and as much as I appreciate it I decided to choose Brisbane Roar.”

During his two-season stint with Perth, Taggart showed glimpses of his 2013-14 season form with Newcastle, which saw him play at the 2014 World Cup and earn a contract with Fulham.

After scoring nine goals in 14 starts last term Taggart is confident of getting on the field more consistently this season.

“I’d like to think so,” he said.

“I have a good pre-season I’ve worked a lot on the things that I need to work on and just going back to basics and working hard on the field and it’s working well.

“Previously I’ve tried to focus on a million and one things and just eventually overloaded something or I broke down.

“I’m really confident in my body and my fitness at the moment.

“I’m a hungry guy and I want as much success as I can and I believe that John Aloisi will also help me get to the level that I want to be at and reach my life long dreams and goals as a footballer.

Many pundits and fans don’t see Brisbane as a threat to the teams from Sydney and Melbourne but Taggart prefers the Roar being viewed as the underdogs.

“It’s probably difficult these days to compete with those clubs and the hype that they have because of the amount of money they spend,” he said.

“But it doesn’t matter it doesn’t bother us. We are all confident in what we are doing and that’s all that matters really.

“We are the only ones that see what is happening behind the scenes and of course we are the only ones who can make the right judgement on the way that we are going.

“We are all happy with the whole pre-season and with each other and we will be just looking to work hard and start playing football games on Sunday against the Mariners.”
