CHONBURI coach Jadet Meelarp is expecting another difficult encounter in the AFC Champions League when his side takes on Melbourne Victory at Supachalasai Stadium tonight.
The Thai champions secured a surprise 1-1 draw with Japan's Gamba Osaka on Matchday 1, with the J-League side only salvaging a point thanks to an injury-time equaliser from Brazilian striker Lucas, and Jadet is preparing his team for another monumental challenge against the 2007 A-League winners.
"It will be a tough match for us," he said. "They beat Chunnam Dragons 2-0 in Melbourne while we were lucky to get a point against Gamba Osaka.
"But we have to beat them in this game if we want to find a way out of the group stages of the AFC Champions League.
"They have many good players, like Archie Thompson who is an Australian international and who came to play in the Asian Cup in Thailand last year.
"We will have to put on our best possible performance and I believe we can win against the Australians on our home ground."
Only one Thai side has successfully negotiated the group phase of the AFC Champions, when BEC Tero Sasana qualified from a group that also featured Kashima Antlers, Shanghai Shenhua and Daejeon Citizen of Korea before going on to reach the inaugural final, where they lost to Al Ain of the United Arab Emirates.
Chonburi faces a task of similar magnitude to that overcome by BEC in this year's competition and Melbourne coach Ernie Merrick is determined his side will come away from Bangkok with a win which will move them a step closer to not only the knockout phase, but also to eliminating the Thais.
"We all felt quite good and felt sharp out there," said Socceroos striker Thompson after a one-hour training session in the heat and humidity of Bangkok.
"We know they're going to be full of confidence after a good result. But we're just going to go out and play the football we've been playing. We're here to get three points. Anything less, I would be disappointed."
Merrick is expected to make one change to the line-up that defeated Pohang, with Daniel Vasilevski in line for a call-up.
