Moments after the final whistle Schwarzer was seen in the centre circle as a brouhaha with Paraguayan officials threatened to boil over.

Schwarzer dismissed the visitors' reaction to the loss thanks to a 53rd minute scorching strike from Socceroo David Carney.

"Their players were obviously not happy with the result and they wanted to continue on with our players for whoever knows whatever reason," Schwarzer told au.fourfourtwo.com.

Minutes earlier Socceroo substitute Scott McDonald was involved in some pushing and shoving after one Paraguayan defender grabbed him by the throat.

"I just got in there to make sure nothing got out of hand and tried to keep some of the players away because they were over-reacting the Paraguayans," added Schwarzer of the post-match stoush.

The incident did not take away from what has been a special week for the legendary Roo custodian. He was awarded the 2010 Male Footballer of the Year at Thursday's Australian Football Awards.

It was a big night for the Fulham custodian who also claimed Professional Footballers Association (PFA) Player of the Year honours.

"It's been an amazing week not only being one of the lucky ones to represent my country but by being presented with awards is the icing on the cake."

He added: "I never gave up hope and believing that I was good enough to make it."

Schwarzer was told yesterday he was to be captain against Paraguay and although he's worn the armband before, skippering his nation in his home city was extra special.

"It's an amazing honour," he said. "I've been very very fortunate enough to have done it before but every time gives me a massive buzz.

"I'm extremely proud and hope I get the opportunity to do it again."

Schwarzer said the game was an eye-catching one with the Roos employing a more offensive formation than favoured by previous coach Pim Verbeek. In fact, he said, it should've been more than a one goal margin.

"It was an entertaining football game and a great result," he said.

"We were very positive in the way we played. And I think in the end we should've won the game more comfortably in the end."
